Following the
president's congressional address
Tuesday night, how to get rid of mothball smell on clothes some of the top late night comedians including
Stephen Colbert
and
Jimmy Fallon
had no shortage of jokes to make about the content of speech and how others reacted to it. (Some kept jokes vague because they taped shows prior to the speech's 9 p.m. EDT start; others, like
"The Daily Show with Trevor Noah"

Here's how late night hosts reacted on air to Biden's State of the Union speech just hours after it was delivered.
Everyone from lawmakers to journalists to viewers at home weighed in on President Joe Biden's first State of the Union address – late night television hosts were no exception.
'The Late Show with Stephen Colbert'
Colbert went live on CBS following the SOTU, recapping a speech he dubbed "a roller-coaster ride of rip-roaring reasonableness."
On those in attendance wearing blue and yellow to honor Ukraine:
"It’s a show of solidarity not seen since the last ‘Minions’ movie.”
On lawmakers on both sides of the aisle standing in solidarity with Ukraine:
"It was a moving moment of bipartisan unity, especially considering the last time Congress stood up that fast together, they were the ones fleeing a fascist invasion."
On Biden's decision to close American airspace to Russian flights:
"If he really wanted to punish Russia, he'd just divert all their flights to Newark."
On House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy looking at his phone during the speech:
"To be fair, today’s Wordle was pretty tricky. Of course the minority leader in the House not paying attention looked disrespectful. But keep in mind, he might’ve been on Amazon shopping for a spine."
'Late Night with Seth Meyers'
Seth Meyers
' opening monologue featured a smattering of jokes about the latest news from this week, from hard-hitting Ukraine updates to Mardi Gras events and Dunkin's new shamrock macchiato. But he began the night with one joke in response to Biden's address.
On Biden mentioning Supreme Court Justice nominee Ketanji Brown Jackson:
"Thank God he got that Supreme Court justice in, 'cause there was not much else to talk about. I think there's a
new 'Batman' movie
this week?"

'Jimmy Kimmel Live!'
Jimmy Kimmel
began his show with comments that seemed to react to the prepared text released by the White House ahead of time, tackling Ukraine, Republican opposition and Donald Trump. He ultimately decided that the "State of our Union is about as strong as Kim (Kardashian) and Kanye (West) right now." (In other words, "it's not.")
On finding common ground despite political differences:
“It was a tough speech. Biden said that even though the country is divided right now, we all need to come together and agree that the “Sex and the City” reboot - wasn’t anywhere near what we hoped it would be.
TL;DR:
"He probably could've just saved some time and tweeted that the State of the Union is 'malarkey AF.' "

'The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon'
Fallon, like his late-night peers, mentioned the SOTU before taking swings at Putin, Trump and Mardi Gras celebrations.
On division among lawmakers:
"During his speech, Biden introduced his new unity agenda. And you can tell it worked because every single Republican ignored him."
On Biden's call with Ukraine president Volodymyr Zelenskyy before the SOTU:
"Zelenskyy asked Biden to share weapons and Biden asked Zelenskyy to share his approval rating."
On Kamala Harris and Nancy Pelosi sitting behind Biden at the podium:
"Fox News was like, 'Throw in Hillary (Clinton) and you've got all four horsemen.' "
SOTU by the numbers:
“Yep, it was historic — 400 representatives, 100 senators and size 96 font on the teleprompter.”
